Hey everyone!
So we learned from one of my favorite new professors that there is a lot of gypsies in Sevilla. Evidently there is a town within an hour away, he won ´t tell us exactly where it is as he doesn't want us visiting it, and taxis will not travel there. The people live in flats that were supplied to them by the government a long time ago. they are really run down and rumors say that if you peek in them you will most likely find livestock and run down beds. They believe that their animals should live as well as them so the livestock lives in the apartments with them, even on the top floors!
I guess a couple years ago there was a famliy in the town that did something the village didn ´t agree with and they felt that they needed to punish them so they set their house on fire. This fire was so big tha Sevilla ´s firetruck tried to respond to it and it was shot at by locals and was not able to respond. So now policemen, fireman, buses nothing goes out to this place it is just ignored and that is what the gypsies want.
Just a little background Gypsies came from Pakistan and India in 1425 and 45% of gypsies live in Andalucia ( which is southern Spain). Until the 19th century they were not considered Spanish. They have their own laws, flag and hymn. The flag is a wagonwheel representing that they are nomads. Most gypsies live under the threshold of poverty and most spaniards would be upset if they had neighbors that were gypsies.
However, while Spaniards don ´t like them very much they do owe the art of flamenco to them, at least some say that. Today if you want to go to a good flamenco performance it will be performed by gypsies.
That is about it - hope you liked it!
